How Drew Brees’ Surprise For A High School Quarterback Will Help Him Get Back In The Game

"There's no denying the look in his eyes."

After a severe injury on the football field, high school student Alex Ruiz had his right leg amputated from the knee down.

Ruiz, a player for Linfield Christian High School in Temecula, California, is a huge fan of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and earlier this month, Brees surprised Ruiz with an incredible gift.

During a presentation through the Football 'N' America (FNA) — a co-ed flag football league for kids from kindergarten up to 10th grade that Brees co-founded — Brees presented Ruiz with a prosthetic leg.

"Surprise!" Brees said to Ruiz over a microphone. "We would like to present you with your walking prosthetic leg. But not just this: we are committing to you that in the fall, once you start running and training and competing again, we're going to get you your athletic-training prosthetic as well."

In a video from the presentation, tweeted by Zach Wonderlie for 10 News, Ruiz is clearly shocked and thankful for the gift: "If there's anything above cloud nine, that's where I'm at right now."

"It's going to allow him to walk around ... and then eventually get to the point where he's able to play football again," Brees said of the prosthetic. "Because ask him right now, and there's no denying the look in his eyes."

ESPN reports that Brees explained his league partners with local charities, such as the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which selected Ruiz. But Brees had actually reached out and sent a personalized jersey to Ruiz prior to this after hearing about his circumstances from a friend.

"In the back of my mind, I said to myself, 'I hope I get a chance to meet this young man someday,' " Brees told ESPN. "Alex has suffered a long and very difficult road but has remained so positive and insists this set of circumstances will not hold him back. He still has loftier goals than ever for his athletic career and beyond. We wanted to help his dreams come true."

"This is what it's all about — providing the best family experience we can through our FNA flag football leagues and connecting with the communities in which we play."

We can't wait to see what the future has in store for Ruiz!
