Mom's Picture Of 10-Year-Old Son With Leukemia Shows The Strength And Determination Required To Fight

"From the moment I found out I was pregnant till future forever, he has been my reason for life."

A picture of 10-year-old Drake Medinger (below) that went viral a few days ago is not – and we cannot emphasize this more powerfully – a photograph of a dying child.

It is a photograph of a 5th grade boy who is battling cancer; who is fighting for his life against leukemia for the second time: a long and protracted battle that, like all battles, is exhausting, frustrating, painful, and clouded in fear.

Far too often, people tell those who are fighting cancer, or the families of those who support them to "stay positive," while offering well-meant advice, not realizing just how tiring and exhausting this kind of fight is. Between either being in pain or bearing witness to pain; waiting for answers and fearing the answers, the realities of a cancer battle aren't something that anyone can solve with a comment on Facebook.

The photograph of Drake was shared by Love What Matters on Facebook and contained a slightly altered version of Drake's mother Jessica Medinger's original post, which aimed to shed light on what her son and his family go through every single day.

Her frustration is apparent, but more poignant and moving than that is her determination. The original post ends:

"This is him not wanting to be touched, because it hurts too much, and using morphine to get through his day. This is him telling me he is scared and thinks he wont see his 11th birthday. This is him and me, telling him that I will continue to fight for him when he cant. This is him and me, and our world.

This is him, Drake, Stinky Joe, my whole world. From the moment I found out I was pregnant till future forever, he has been my reason for life. He is my smile, my love, my heartbeat. He is also my tears, my heart ache, my frowns. He is my life."

After the post unexpectedly went viral, Drake's mother wrote:

"This picture never was meant to go viral. His page only had friends and family on it. A few shares later and it exploded. I shared this picture because it is real life for us and his family. Both Drake and I are completely honest and open with his treatment and what he goes through. IF, and that is a huge IF something happens to my son, I would be honored that this picture brought awareness to childhood cancer."

You can also send cards and messages of support to them by post. His family has a list of some of the things he likes here.
