Ken Dolls Finally Got A Major Transformation

"By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation."

Mattel has been highly criticized in the past for their dolls which have unrealistic body proportions and lack diversity. As a result, the company expanded their Barbie line last year to include all body types — petite, tall, and curvy — as well as seven different skin tones to represent different races and ethnicities. Now, Ken dolls are getting the same inclusive and empowering treatment.

Mattel announced 15 new Ken dolls with three diverse body types — "slim," "broad," and "original." They also come in seven different skin tones, eight hair colors, nine hairstyles, and a variety of eye colors. In addition, the brand added 25 more diverse Barbie dolls to their lineup.

The new dolls mark Ken's first major transformation since he first debuted in 1961.

"By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation," Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager at Barbie, said in a press release. "Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie's world."

Mattel released 10 of the 15 new dolls yesterday both in stores and online and the other five will be widely available in the next few months. Each one costs $9.99.

Young girls and boys will now have the option to play with dolls that show them their bodies, and the bodies of their loved ones, are normal and worth loving.

While these dolls are a great step in the right direction, there's still many other body types and skin tones that aren't represented by these dolls. For one, "broad" Ken is still fairly fit. Hopefully, it won't take another 56 years for the brand to continue to diversify their Ken dolls.
