Demi Lovato Celebrates Six Years Of Sobriety By Sharing A Powerful Message With Fans

"There are people here tonight that need to ask for help."

Last week, Demi Lovato marked six years of sobriety with a Twitter post letting fans know, "It IS possible." Then over the weekend, she celebrated the anniversary with concertgoers and tour partners DJ Khaled and Kehlani during a performance at Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Barclays Center.

DJ Khaled praised Lovato's journey, telling her, according to Entertainment Weekly, "What you've overcome through trials and tribulations, through dark clouds, you've found the sunshine, and now the sun shines on you forever." Kehlani, meanwhile, told her, "You are 100 percent yourself, and that is so rare in this world and this industry."

The pair then led the crowd in singing "Happy Birthday" to the star to commemorate the milestone before Lovato herself delivered an emotional message to fans. "Yesterday was a really big day for me," she shared. "Yesterday, six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at 9 in the morning, throwing up in the car, and I just remember thinking, 'This is no longer cute. This is no longer fun. And I'm just like my dad.' "

"The reason why I became so open about my story is because I know that there are people here tonight that need to ask for help, and I want you to know that's OK," Lovato continued. "Mental health is something that we don't ever talk about, and we need to take the stigma away. So let's raise the awareness. Let's let everybody know it's OK to have a mental illness."

In January, the singer announced that she would be giving fans at her concerts the opportunity to attend free therapy workshops before the show, with help from CAST Centers, which Lovato herself attended in 2011. She also recently announced a new contest on Instagram, encouraging fans to submit videos sharing their stories of recovery for a chance to be a guest speaker at Lovato's final U.S. tour date.
