Disney, Apple, and Google Donate to Relief Efforts After Hurricane Michael

This week, all three companies announced their sizable donations to aid disaster relief efforts in Florida.

As Florida's Gulf Coast continues to reel from the devastating impact of Hurricane Michael, some of the biggest companies in the world are stepping up to help provide disaster relief. In the past few days, Disney, Apple, and Google have all made sizable donations towards the state's ongoing recovery efforts.

On Friday, the Walt Disney Company announced a donation of $1 million to the Florida Disaster Fund, as well as matching dollar for dollar any additional donations made by Disney employees.

"All of us here at Disney have the families and communities impacted by this powerful storm in our hearts," CEO Robert Iger said in a statement, per Orlando Weekly. "Florida has been our home for almost 50 years, and our contribution will support our neighbors as they rebuild their communities in the wake of this powerful storm."

The announcement follows similar relief efforts from tech giants, Google and Apple. On Thursday, Google CEO Sundar Pinchai announced that the company is donating $1 million to help those impacted by the powerful storm. "It's been a tough hurricane season for the Southeastern US. We're thinking of those affected by #HurricaneMichael," Pinchai tweeted while announcing the donation.

In addition to contributing funds, Google is also implementing tools to help local residents in the aftermath of the disaster. According to CNet, the company has activated SOS alerts for those living in the areas affected by Hurricane Michael.

Apple also plans to provide aid to residents of damaged cities in the wake of the hurricane. CEO Tim Cook, who grew up in the Florida Gulf Coast, tweeted on Thursday, "Apple is standing with our friends and neighbors in the Gulf Coast region, and will be donating to recovery and relief efforts."

This is hardly the first time the tech giants have donated to hurricane relief. Last month Apple donated $1 million to the Red Cross in response to Hurricane Florence. Google also raised $1 million for disaster relief efforts after Florence.

While Disney, Google, and Apple focus on raising funds for rebuilding efforts in Florida, Airbnb is also making its own contribution. The company is expanding its Open Homes Program (as it did after Hurricane Harvey and Florence) to help evacuees find free accommodation, this time across almost all of North Florida and the entire state of Georgia.
