After A Scary Moment At The Global Citizen Festival, Chris Martin Reassured The Crowd

"Nobody is trying to hurt anybody."

Over the weekend, Chris Martin of Coldplay set out to reassure a frightened crowd at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City's Central Park after a noise was mistaken for gunfire and led to panic. No shooting was found to have taken place, as Martin made sure to inform attendees.

"What happened is a barrier, I think, fell down," Martin explained from the stage. "Of course, it caused people to be a little frightened and stuff like that. But nobody is trying to hurt anybody. You're all safe, OK? I just want to tell you that."

According to the New York Times, although the noise was initially attributed to a fallen barrier, police have reportedly determined that it was the sound of at least one bottle being stepped on. Global Citizen's CEO Hugh Evans explained the situation in a message on Sunday.

"A few dozen people reported injuries and sought treatment for injuries sustained as they were moving away from the area," Evans wrote. "To those who were injured or frightened by this experience, we sincerely apologize. We recognize how traumatic this was for many of you."

"As far as I know, when you guys are ready, we can watch Janet Jackson, which we all probably want to do. If you're at the back and you're worried, of course everybody's worried. We all care about people," Martin continued in his speech to the crowd, before asking NYPD Assistant Chief Kathleen O'Reilly to say a few words.

Martin is the curator of the Global Citizen Festival, an annual event which offers free tickets to fans who show commitment to social causes. Global Citizen is a movement to end extreme poverty by the year 2030.

After the incident, Global Citizen tweeted that "everyone is safe" and the show was continuing, adding a lyric from Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation": "People of the world unite, strength in numbers we can get it right."
