Here's Why Chris Hemsworth Thinks Charlize Theron Would Be Perfect As The Next James Bond

"Why not? It's time."

Chris Hemsworth knows exactly who should play James Bond when Daniel Craig leaves the franchise — and no, it's not him, although an Australian Bond could be interesting.

Instead, Hemsworth thinks it's about time that a woman inhabited the iconic role. Specifically, he wants to see Charlize Theron ordering those martinis shaken, not stirred. The upcoming film Atomic Blonde (out July 28), in which Theron plays a badass British spy, has already drawn comparisons to 007. So why not just make it official?

A new W magazine article examines the case for Theron as Bond, and includes a clip of Hemsworth talking to Lynn Hirschberg about his experience working with the actress, and why he thinks she would be perfect:

Well, I've made the comment that Charlize Theron should be the next Bond, because she scares the hell out of me. And I think she could beat the shit out of me, and most villains out there ... She embodies every ounce of strength and nobility and dignity and integrity that that character should have. She's smart as hell. She's physically able. I worked with her on Snow White and the Huntsman. Watching her in those fight scenes, doing it in high heels, by the way, and an eight foot long gown was even more impressive.

"I just think, why not?" he added. "It's time." He even shared that he's cool with being the "Bond man," or even doing a "duet of Bonds."

We love that Chris Hemsworth not only speaks highly of his co-stars, but also clearly acknowledges just how capable women are of taking on these types of kick-ass roles. In fact, just last month, he declared that Wonder Woman could "kick Thor's a**" — which she did, at the box office.

Entertainment Tonight made sure to ask Theron what she thought of Hemsworth's comment at the Berlin premiere of Atomic Blonde earlier this week. She was flattered by the recommendation.

"Chris — so, you got that check I sent you? Thanks, dude. I got your back," the actress joked, adding, "That's so insanely generous and nice. I don't even know what to do with that. That's really sweet."

But unfortunately, it sounds like Theron-as-Bond may not be in the cards. "All of the talk around it I find very flattering, but it's a little overwhelming," she admitted. "Daniel [Craig], you got the job. I am not going to take that job away from you."

Craig's devotion to the role has been rather up in the air in recent years, although he told Vulture in October, "As far as I'm concerned, I've got the best job in the world. I'll keep doing it as long as I still get a kick out of it."

And although Theron may not be jumping at the role just yet, the idea of a woman playing James Bond at some point isn't out of the question. Several other actresses have said they would be interested in the part, including Gillian Anderson and Priyanka Chopra. Considering actress Jodie Whittaker was just announced to play the title role in Doctor Who, who's to say another ever-changing British icon can't finally be a woman?
