Blake Lively Salutes 'Girl Power' In Heartfelt People's Choice Awards Acceptance Speech

"Tell your stories."

On Wednesday night, actress Blake Lively won her first People's Choice Award, picking up the Dramatic Movie Actress statue for her role in The Shallows. During her acceptance speech, Lively emphasized the importance of telling women's stories on film — and even managed to work the Spice Girls into things.

"My mama, she always taught me as a kid that you can't ever let anyone limit you," Lively recalled. "Don't ever let anyone tell you there's something you can't do."

Lively's childhood goal, she explained, was to meet the Spice Girls. That earned a giggle from the audience, but Lively had a good reason for her obsession. "What was so neat about them is that they're all so distinctly different, and they were women, and they owned who they were. And that was my first introduction into girl power."

Lively gave a shout-out to her fellow nominees (Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep) and thanked fans for supporting women in film. "When you guys voted for this, you didn't just vote for this movie or me, but you voted for girl power ... And the men voted for girl power, too, and you guys are awesome for doing that. So thank you for sending a message to Hollywood that people want to hear stories about women."

She also had a message of encouragement for those outside the film industry. "And we want to hear your stories, whether it's social media, your iPhone, whatever. Tell your stories, now more than ever. You need to be heard, you are valuable, and no one can limit you."

Lively ended by thanking her husband Ryan Reynolds, who has a knack for heartwarming and humorous acceptance speeches himself. Last month he dedicated his Critics' Choice Award for Deadpool to children's cancer charities. We'd say that makes them a pretty cool couple.
