The Touching Way ‘The Big Bang Theory’ Paid Tribute To Stephen Hawking

The show sent one final goodbye to the theorectical physicist.

After the death of Stephen Hawking in March, tributes to the theoretical physicist poured in from all over the world. In a testament to his legacy, this week, The Big Bang Theory released a clip from the show's season finale in which the stars sent one final goodbye to Hawking. The scene, which was cut from broadcast due to time constraints, has since received much praise from fans of the show.

The scene takes place after the wedding of characters Amy and Sheldon, played by Mayim Bialik and Jim Parsons, respectively. As the couple celebrates the fact that Mark Hamill (aka Luke Skywalker) served as the officiant at their wedding, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) visit to bring over some wedding presents that were mistakenly delivered to their apartment, one of which appears to have been sent by Hawking before his death

The gift is revealed to be a pocket watch with a special engraving that leaves more than one of the characters in tears. The scene was quick to draw similarly emotional reactions from Twitter, including from season finale guest star Hamill.

Hawking appeared in a scene of The Big Bang Theory in 2012, and executive producer Steve Holland told Entertainment Weekly that the show's producers reached out to Hawking's family for permission to do the scene.

"We really wanted to get a chance to reference him and his passing and his importance to the show," Holland said. "It was hard to because, when it happened, we had already shot three episodes, so there was no way to be super-timely about it, and this seemed like a great chance for us to do it in this big special episode."
