Beyoncé's Efforts To Provide Clean, Safe Water To People In Burundi Just Got A Big Assist

"Access to water is a fundamental right."

For many places around the world, every day is World Water Day. It's because of this that Gucci and CHIME FOR CHANGE have announced a partnership with Beyoncé's BeyGOOD and UNICEF to help bring clean, safe water to Burundi's citizens.

"Access to water is a fundamental right," reads a quote from Beyoncé in a video commemorating the partnership. "When you give children clean and safe water, you don't give them life, you give them health, an education, and a brighter future."

Per a press release, the "Lemonade" singer began the multi-year BEYGOOD4BURUNDI back in 2017 alongside UNICEF in the hopes of affecting real change by the year 2020 and has already helped build 35 wells. With the addition of Gucci, which is donating $1 million, and CHIME FOR CHANGE, this partnership will help build an additional 80 wells for the Burundian people — nearly half of whom do not have access to drinkable water.

"This is a testament to the power of one woman's passion and the power of partnership," Ivy McGregor, the director of philanthropy and corporate relations at Parkwood Entertainment, which houses Beyoncé's BeyGOOD initiative, said. "On World Water Day I'm delighted that our friends and partners Gucci and CHIME FOR CHANGE also believe that 'Water Is Life' and are moved to action by joining forces with us. Now we will be able to help nearly a half million people have access to safe, clean water."

World Water Day is a yearly observance on March 22 that originally started by the United Nations to highlight the importance of access to water around the globe. Access to drinkable water means children won't die from water-borne diseases, nutrition will improve, medical procedures will be sanitary, girls won't have to sacrifice education, and women won't have to put themselves in danger to gather it. Essentially, life will improve.

Water, in some parts of the world, is a way to help achieve equality.
