A Campaign To Protect Betty White From 2016 Is Actually Raising Money For Another Great Cause

This year has taken too many icons.

We've lost far too many beloved entertainers in 2016. This week's loss of both Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds, just days before the new year, has many on social media worried that even more icons will be taken from us before the clock strikes 2017.

One person the internet is especially desperate to keep around is 94-year-old actress Betty White. The former Golden Girls star is so adored that a GoFundMe campaign has been created to protect her. As the fundraiser's creator Demetrios Hrysikos writes in the description, "I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe" until January. He explains that the idea came to him after Carrie Fisher's death, to try to put a smile on people's faces.

It's a funny idea, and of course we want White to stay healthy and continue making us laugh, but you might be wondering where the money Hrysikos raises (more than $6,000 so far) will actually go. In that case, don't worry — it won't be going to waste. He promises to donate the proceeds to the Spartanburg Little Theatre in South Carolina, "to help craft new stars of stage and screen to carry [the] mantle of the legends that have left [us] this year."

Hrysikos aims to raise $10,000 and will end the campaign at midnight on New Year's Eve. "I'd like to think that Betty, Carrie, and Bowie would be happy with any proceeds going to that cause, which I assure you it WILL!"

The executive artistic director of the theater, Jay Coffman, is appreciative of the gesture, telling local news, "I thought it was hilarious, number one, and the more I thought about it, I just thought that it was incredibly generous and heartwarming at the end of this year, which has been such a troublesome year for a lot of people."
