The Babee On Board App Makes It Easier For Pregnant Women To Get Seats On Public Transit

Making sure that mama-to-be gets a seat.

Even though many public transportation systems have designated seats for expectant mothers, the seats are often taken by passengers who may not know a pregnant woman is on board. To help those women get seats, a London-based data innovation firm called 10X developed the Babee On Board app.

The Babee on Board website explains that the app works in two parts: A pregnant woman can download the "Request Seat" app that sends a notification out to anyone who has downloaded the free "Offer Seat" app. Those with the "Offer Seat" app are then able to offer their seat to anyone who has requested it.

The app uses Bluetooth, so it will still work even if you're underground on the train.

The "Request Seat" app currently costs about $5 with 100 percent of the profits from the app being donated to Project Healthy Children, an organization dedicated to ending micronutrient deficiencies in the developing world.

10x CEO Hew Leith explained that he came up with the idea for the app after failing to notice a pregnant woman who needed a seat. He said in a statement to Mashable, "A year ago, an 80-year-old woman, who was sat next to me on a busy Tube, got up and offered her seat to a heavily pregnant woman. I was mortified. I was too engrossed on my smartphone to notice anything," he explained, "So as soon as I let the older woman have my seat, I began racking my brains for a solution. By the time the Tube train pulled into the platform at Moorgate [station], I had the idea to use beacon Bluetooth notifications so pregnant people could let commuters know they'd like a seat."

The app is currently being tested in London before it will launch worldwide. The Babee on Board website also states that the company is looking to partner with third-party apps so people wouldn't even need to download the "Offer Seat" app.

As the company says, it's goal is to make commuting stress-free and less awkward for everybody.
