Amy Schumer Stands Next To Her Dad For The First Time In Years In An Emotional Video

“We had a good day.”

He's been standing up to adversity for decades now, but Amy Schumer's father, Gordon, literally stood up yesterday, November 16, after years in a wheelchair.

Gordon was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when Amy was 12 years old, and the comedy star has stuck by his side, even as he lost his business and his marriage. In fact, she lifted his spirits in recent years by buying back the family farm and introducing him to her Snatched co-star Goldie Hawn.

And yesterday, Amy got to stand shoulder to shoulder with her father, thanks to technology provided by his doctors at Tisch MS Research Center of New York.

"My dad stood today with the help of a device. But he stood," the 36-year-old actress wrote in the caption to an Instagram video documenting the happy occasion. "Thank you to his nurse Sam, Dr. Kanter, Dr. Sadiq, [and] everyone at Tisch for their MS stem cell work. Also Pure Prairie League for their song 'Amie,' his favorite song. We had a good day."

In the video, Amy and the doctors watch as the device lifts Gordon upright, with "Amie" playing in the background. "I hate this song," Gordon quips before telling the docs he named Amy after that 1973 track.

Seems like both father and daughter use humor to cut through their suffering. "It's the most painful thing in the world to just watch this person that you love ultimately just digress and kind of decompose," Amy told Morning Edition in 2013. "And it's too heavy and you have to find a way to laugh at it. I will on stage go to a very dark place and make light of things that are painful. And it makes me feel better to hear about other people's struggles, so I like to share mine."

Despite the situation, Amy said Gordon is still "just hilarious" and jokes with her about the other residents in the assisted living facility.

"When I go see him, it's not heavy," she added. "He's happy."
