Amy Schumer Surprises Her Dad For The Holidays By Buying Back Their Family Farm

"We lost the farm when we lost everything else."

Finding the most thoughtful holiday gift for a family member — or anyone, really — can be a challenge. This year, however, Amy Schumer found the perfect way to surprise her father. The actress and comedian shared on Instagram that she bought back the farm her family lost when she was a kid.

Schumer told NPR in 2014 that her father used to own a successful furniture company, and her family lived a wealthy lifestyle on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. When she was "12 or 13," however, her father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis around the same time his business went under. The family declared bankruptcy and moved to Long Island, and then her parents split up.

"It was Hunger Games," she told Entertainment Weekly last year. "I was like, 'I'll take it from here.' I tried to make everything okay by making everyone laugh about how horrible things were. It kept us alive."

This week, however, Schumer did more for her family than just make them laugh. To share her meaningful gesture with her fans, she posted a childhood home video on Instagram (above) in which she talks to her father, who is behind the camera, from a cornfield on her family's farm.

"Video from the farm when I was running away in the cornfield and my dad was taunting me because I wanted him to come with me," she wrote in the caption. "We lost the farm when we lost everything else. But today I got to buy it back for him."

She also shared an image of herself FaceTiming with her father, presumably showing his emotional reaction to the news. "Today I bought my father's farm back," she wrote.

The importance of family is evident throughout Schumer's work in Hollywood. Her character in the 2015 film Trainwreck, which she wrote and starred in, has a father named Gordon (played by Colin Quinn) who also has MS. Additionally, Schumer's younger sister Kim Caramele has written for her series Inside Amy Schumer and is reported to be helping her rewrite the script for the upcoming Barbie movie in which Schumer may star.

Schumer's star may be on the rise, but it's clear that she's not leaving her loved ones behind.
