A U.K. Children's Hospital Plans To Use 3D Holograms During High-Risk Surgeries

“It's incredibly important that we embrace technology."

A U.K. hospital has partnered with Microsoft to develop advanced technology that would allow doctors to work collaboratively and remotely, per Engadget.

Microsoft announced that Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool wants to start using live 3D holograms in the operating rooms. The rooms would be equipped with Surface Hubs, a 50.5-inch,webcam with a touchscreen, that would allow medical professionals to collaborate on a digital screen.

In addition, teams would use HoloLens to share live updates of a patient's condition mid-operation, which Microsoft touts as having powerful visualization capabilities.

The hospital, in Liverpool, serves more than 270,000 families a year, and the new technologies would be used for critical heart surgeries. The Surface Hub would allow doctors to immediately access ultrasounds, CT scans, tests and other patient information.

"Imaging a patient's heart from the inside and from the outside is absolutely essential," Rafael Guerrero, a cardiac surgeon at Alder Hey said in a press release."

Guerrero added that having the live images (including 3D heart scans) and updates  would allow him to perform more efficiently.

"I have to visualize that 3D view in my head in order to do this operation," Guerrero said. "You can display those images on a screen in the operating theatre sometimes, but it's not easily accessible, and I can't leave in the middle of an operation to go get more information about my patient. In many cases, the heart has already stopped in order for us too."

Iain Hennessey, the clinical director at Alder Hey,  said the new technology would save lives.

"It's incredibly important that we embrace technology to get our best people out there and do extraordinary things," Hennessey said. "At the end of the day, the health of children is more important than anything else."
