Michael Bloomberg Steps Up, Pledges $15 Million To U.N. Climate Fund

"Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement."

Michael Bloomberg announced Friday his intention to donation $15 million to the United Nations as an effort to cover part of the U.S.'s prior commitment to the organization. President Trump's announcement this week of his intention to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement has left the future of the accord uncertain.

"Americans will honor and fulfill the Paris Agreement by leading from the bottom up – and there isn't anything Washington can do to stop us," said Bloomberg, who serves as the U.N. Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, in an official statement.

Bloomberg flew to Paris Friday to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. The visit came just after the philanthropist, businessman and former mayor of New York City launched a coalition of U.S. cities and corporations which intend to honor the agreement. Macron is leading Europe's efforts to keep the accord intact.

In partnership with other organizations, Bloomberg Philanthropies hopes to fill part of the funding gap for the U.N.'s Climate Secretariat that is expected to occur as the U.S. begins the process of leaving the agreement. The $15 million would cover the U.S.'s share of the organization's operating budget, according to CNN.

Bloomberg is one of dozens of local leaders, politicians and influencers from around the world who have responded directly to Trump's decision. On Thursday, the mayors of 187 U.S. cities, including those as large as Los Angeles and as small as University City, Mo., published an open letter promising "to adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement."

"Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement," said Bloomberg.  "Just the opposite – we are forging ahead."
