What's A-Parent is a series highlighting those who get real about the hardships that come with raising kids. These often untold stories help show parents they are not alone in their struggle, and are doing an amazing job.
There are few things more real than motherhood, especially giving birth. There's nothing else like it. It is magical, but is also exhausting and stressful. And, sometimes, it can be hilarious.
Amanda Bacon, a mom who recently gave birth to her second child, understands this. To highlight what it is really like postpartum, she uploaded a Facebook photo of herself in the hospital post-delivery that her husband, Ken Hardy, took. However, this wasn't your average mother-and-baby-cuddling-together pic.
Bacon posted a photo of herself wearing the mesh underwear the hospital gives new mothers.
To accompany the photo, Bacon wrote a letter to highlight the very real effects of giving birth.
Motherhood uncensored. I'm sharing this picture because it's real. This is motherhood; it's raw, stunning, messy, and freaking hilarious all rolled into one. Having a baby is a beautiful experience, and the realities of postpartum life aren't spoken enough about. And definitely not photographed enough. Some people probably find this uncomfortable, but why? I seriously don't get it! It's probably because this part isn't talked about. We all should try and educate, empower and embrace every aspect of childbirth, including moments like this. And do it while having a sense of humor. Nothing says welcome to motherhood like an adorable squishy baby, and a giant mom diaper. Edit. I posted this picture. Not my husband.
Bacon's post went up on July 6 and has already generated a lot of discussions. It has over a 126,000 shares and a whopping 103,000 comments from moms, mothers-to-be, and people who have never experienced childbirth or pregnancy.
Many other mothers are writing in about what it was like when they gave birth. One mother agreed how brilliant the mesh underwear-cum-diapers were. She wrote,
"Love! The mesh underwear were my savior and all my mommy friends agree! Motherhood in the raw!"
Another mother added a few other items she enjoyed besides the mesh underwear, "Loved those huge ice pads you put in those net underwear, and the squirt bottle filled with warm water. Admire you for posting this, this is a true reality. Motherhood is amazing even though some aspects are not so glamorous. Take care."
Mesh diapers and squirt bottles aren't the only surprising things about pregnancy and birth. There are also a number things that happen during birth and postpartum that no one really talks about. Feeling like, or having to go #2, getting your perineum cut to help get the baby out, delivering the placenta, and getting stitches and/or staples are all part of the new mom experience.
Other mothers like Bacon are starting to take to social media to get real about pregnancy and all of its aftereffects. Like Bacon, their posts are insightful and often funny, but the best thing about them is that they are creating a dialogue about a completely natural thing.
