One Dancer's Difficult Past Fuels His Beautiful ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Audition

Our jaws have dropped.

At the end of Darius Hickman's stunning So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) audition, judges awarded the contemporary dancer a ticket to the competition's next round in Las Vegas. And considering his performance, their decision seemed simple.

But, according to TV Guide, Hickman's journey hasn't been so easy.

"At a young age, his mom was sentenced to prison and he found himself living with his aunt who soon entered an abusive relationship," the publication reports. "He and his aunt fled several times only to be found by their abuser. She passed away three years ago and his godmother took him in, providing him with a loving home."

However, Hickman's fought through such negativity, using his experiences to inform his dancing. Now, on the SYTYCD stage, Hickman performed to "We Are the Ones" by Son Lux, showcasing hard-hitting moves, soft landings, and a powerful sense of emotion. Throughout the audition, viewers can hear judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Vanessa Hudges voicing their praises.

The performance, uploaded to YouTube, even caught the attention of Son Lux themselves:

"Love this interpretation of our track. Kudos, Darius!" they commented

Finally, Bustle notes that Lythgoe believes Hickman "'deserves something good,' in his life and his dancing will help him make that good happen."

And we can't wait to watch.
