Pink Gets Political In The Powerful Music Video For 'What About Us'

"What about all the times you said you had the answers?"

If you didn't read too much into Pink's new song, "What About Us," when it dropped last week, the pop star is doubling down on its political undertones with a powerful new music video. The clip, which begins with Pink — whose real name is Alecia Beth Moore — having her head shaved while audio depicting the current political atmosphere in the U.S. plays. As the music starts, she joins up with others who appear to be both afraid yet willing to stand together at the same time.

Directed by Georgia Hudson, the music video is dance-heavy with choreography from RJ Durell and Nick Florez, aka the Goldenboyz. No space cannot be turned into a dance floor in the clip, ranging from an empty parking lot to a diner and even a desert. It's quite emotive, with moves ranging from soft to hard-hitting throughout the song as dictated by the beat.

As Rolling Stone points out, the music video for "What About Us" takes its mood from the aftermath of the 2016 election and puts a spotlight on groups whose rights seem to be constantly threatened under President Donald Trump: immigrants, same-sex couples, minorities, and more. With Pink dancing alongside these diverse people — even amid the police cars and helicopter chases — it shows solidarity from someone who has never been afraid to speak out.

Perhaps the most powerful moment comes at the very end, when the entire group comes together and joins Pink for the final pose. They stand there, side by side, as the camera zooms out and shows them all standing alone in the middle of a desert. The mass of people from all walks of life are almost forgotten, giving the song's titular question that much more of a punch.

Pink — whose new album Beautiful Trauma comes out October 13 — will be performing this song live at the 2017 MTV VMAs when accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on August 27. Mark your calendars because, with a timely song like this, you won't want to miss it.
