Madonna's Britney Spears Cover Was About More Than Celebrating The Pop Star's Birthday

"Silence = Death!"

On Friday, December 1, Madonna posted a video to her social media accounts in which she performed an acoustic version of Britney Spears' iconic song "Toxic." It was good timing, as Saturday, December 2, was Spears' 36th birthday.

However, Madonna's performance also coincided with another important date — World AIDS Day. "Silence =Death!" the Queen of Pop wrote to accompany the brief video, which featured an infrared filter. "Song for World AIDS Day!" The tweet has received almost 11,000 likes as of this writing.

Madonna also shared a couple of throwback photos to emphasize the importance of preventing and curing HIV/AIDS. One post featured a letter that ran as an ad in Billboard in 1991. In it, the singer encouraged fans to donate and wrote, "AIDS doesn't care if you're a drug addict or a movie star. But we as people can care and make a difference."

She also posted an old photo of herself with two friends who died of AIDS, artists Keith Haring and Martin Burgoyne. "We can never forget the lives lost by this disease!!" she wrote. Following Haring's death in 1990, Madonna dedicated one of her Blond Ambition tour dates to him and donated the proceeds to AIDS research.

As former President Barack Obama shared in a recent video message for Jimmy Kimmel's (RED) Show, the ongoing fight against AIDS has had an enormous impact, as "more than half of all people living with the virus are on lifesaving medication," and deaths associated with the condition have been cut in half since its peak.

Obama encouraged everyone to "reject cynicism and pessimism in favor of a relentless optimism" and join the fight. We're glad to see Madonna still doing her part to raise awareness.
