Lady Gaga debuted three new songs Wednesday night, including her newest single "Million Reasons," at a dive bar in Nashville. It's part of a Bud Light tour of bars around the country to promote Gaga's new album Joanne. The singer explained the reasoning behind the tour in a statement, saying, "I get to go perform these songs and really look my fans in the eyes when I'm singing to them and really try to have a more natural human experience."
Gaga live streamed the Nashville performance on her Facebook page. She told the crowd, which was made up of contest winners, to call her Joanne. This new persona, as well as the title of her new album, was inspired by Gaga's late aunt, who died of lupus at age 19, the same age Gaga was when she started performing in dive bars and clubs in New York.
"It was really Joanne, and that story of our family, and the toughness that made us who we are," she told Yahoo, "that gave me the strength to go, 'You know, I'm going to live the rest of my life in a way that she couldn't.' "
The singer doesn't just have a new name — she also has a new sound to go with it, one she calls "raw Americana." With her face half hidden by a wide-brimmed hat, Gaga sat on a stool with a guitar to perform her first song "Sinner's Prayer," which has a distinct country vibe.
Gaga describes the new album as "a return to my roots in a very strong way," so it's only fitting that she debut it in the types of places where she got her start. She told Yahoo she wants to "wind back the clock — to the day I decided when I was 19 that I was going to go live the rest of the life that Joanne didn't get to live."
Gaga also performed "A-Yo" before moving into her new single "Million Reasons" with co-writer Hillary Lindsey. She closed the show with a change of clothes and a high-energy performance of last month's debut single "Perfect Illusion."
The next stops on Gaga's Dive Bar Tour will be on October 20 and 27 at undisclosed locations. They will also be live streamed on Facebook. Joanne, available for preorder now, is out October 21.
