Coldplay And Sheryl Crow Each Took Time During Live Performances To Pay Tribute To Tom Petty

"We're all playing with really heavy hearts tonight."

On Monday, Coldplay performed a concert in Portland, and made sure to honor late musician Tom Petty, who just passed away at age 66. The band brought R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck on stage to help them perform a fantastic cover of "Free Fallin'," from Petty's 1989 solo debut album Full Moon Fever.

Prior to the performance, the band also recognized the victims of Sunday's tragic shooting in Las Vegas, by holding a moment of silence as the arena was lit by fans' phones. "When words fail, sometimes quiet is the most eloquent," Coldplay posted on social media.

The band delivered a great performance, and at one point lead singer Chris Martin even encouraged the crowd to sing along to the iconic lyrics. "You guys handled the events of the day with class and grace and delivered an amazing show!" wrote one Facebook commenter.

This isn't the first tribute Coldplay has performed on their current tour. Earlier this year, they honored the late Chester Bennington with a cover of Linkin Park's "Crawling," and later debuted a new song dedicated to Houston after Hurricane Harvey.

Another artist who made sure to recognize Tom Petty on Monday night was Sheryl Crow, who took a moment during her performance at the espnW Women + Sports Summit to share a few words about the rock legend and dedicate a song to him.

"We're all playing with really heavy hearts tonight," Crow said, adding that her song "If It Makes You Happy," which she went on to perform at the event, was "inspired by the way he played" and saying she was "a big fan."
