Plus-Size Models Recreate Kardashian-Jenner's Calvin Klein Ad To Make A Point About Inclusivity

Model Behavior is a series highlighting fashion models promoting body positivity, and working to create inclusivity and diversity within the industry by expanding our definition of conventional beauty.

With much of fashion's ads and runways typically showcasing one type of beauty, sometimes we just need a reminder that fierceness knows no size. Giving us that reminder today are plus-size models Denise Mercedes, Diana Sirokai, Daisy Christina, and Tammy B with their rendition of the Kardashian-Jenner Calvin Klein ad campaign.

"Allllll bodies are beautiful!!!" wrote Mercedes in her Instagram post sharing the photo. Much like the original ad, which featured the reality star family, the recreated shoot pictured the models lounging in their Calvins looking like queens. The models captioned their posts with #CurvesForCalvin and #SorryKylieWentToGiveBirth — a nod to the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan who attempted to hide her baby bump in the Calvin Klein ad. 

The photographer and creative lead of the photo project, KARIZZA, called out the fashion brand on their lack of inclusivity by tagging them in a post that said, "Guys, I hope you will notice how great plus-size girls [are]." The celebrity-inspired shoot is just the first in a series KARIZZA plans to continue. 

"I have been in the photo and fashion industry for already 12 years," KARIZZA told A Plus. "I was working with top models such as Alina Baikova, Victoria Silvstedt and many others. I was shooting for big fashion magazines and brands such as Mercedes Benz. One year ago, I met Diana Sirokai and she inspired me to dedicate my work to the plus-size community. The problems of plus-size girls are very close to me. I am originally from the Ukraine, and there it's very difficult to be curvy and not be judged." 

The photographer told us that she plans to continue pushing the boundaries through empowering photography and by working with fashion brands that cater to plus-size women. "My mission is to make ladies all over the world feel confident, needed, beautiful, loved, and successful. [...] Our recreations of celebrities or fashion campaigns is only the beginning and the way to show that we can do the same and look great."

The reactions of those on the Internet have been overwhelmingly positive. Thousands of followers praised the ladies for their empowering and sexy shoot.

"I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!" said one fan.

"This is amazing and I love it. This is the perfect photoshoot to make. It's time to make all women feel beautiful. All bodies are beautiful. These famous designers need to take notice. I'm here for it. God bless. I love it," said another.

These ladies aren't the only ones who've shattered beauty standards with celebrity-inspired shoots. Back in 2016, Liberian model Deddeh Howard and photographer Raffael Dickreute created the Black Mirror project to represent the beauty of Black women in fashion's predominately White space. In 2015, French former fashion magazine editor Nathalie Croquet created her satirical, yet poignant, Spoof series in which she recreated high fashion ads featuring herself untouched and unfiltered. Most recently, Sirokai, who also stars in the Kardashian-Jenner redo ensemble, went viral when she recreated Gigi Hadid's nude shoot

Thanks to social media, we don't have to wait for the fashion and beauty industry to cater to people of all shapes, sizes, or colors. As more and more influencers and advocates use their platforms to represent people of all backgrounds, and inspire inclusivity, big name brands will hopefully learn to follow suit.
