Born With A Rare Genetic Condition, This Model Is Breaking Barriers And Redefining Beauty

"[I'm] more comfortable with myself how I am."

Model Behavior is an A Plus series featuring fashion models who promote body positivity, and work to create inclusivity and diversity within the industry by expanding our definition of conventional beauty.

This American beauty may not look like your run-of-the-mill fashion model. And she's completely fine with that.

In fact, Melanie Gaydos — who we have written about before — has achieved so much in her four year modeling career because of her differences. Born with ectodermal dysplasia, a rare genetic condition, which prevents teeth, nails, pores, cartilage and bones from developing, the 28-year-old didn't let that stop her from pursuing a career in the fashion industry. Individuals affected by ED face a lifetime of special needs, which may include dentures at a young age, wigs to conceal hair or scalp conditions, protective devices from direct sunlight, and respiratory therapies, according to the Ectodermal Dysplasia Society.

She also suffers from alopecia, which caused her to be partially blind after the growth of her eyelashes scratched her eyes.

Gaydos's conditions aren't something she chose or can modify. But the art graduate, who once hated having her photo taken, did choose to pursue a career in an often unforgiving industry with high standards of beauty after her boyfriend encouraged her to do so. And she's succeeded in a major way, having appeared in countless fashion magazines, on catwalks around the world, and worked with legendary photographers like Eugenio Recuenco.

As the New York City-based model continues shattering societal beauty stereotypes, she's professed how, with time, she's "more comfortable with myself how I am."
