In The Spirit Of Giving

Gal Gadot Presented The First-Ever 'Wonder Woman' Scholarship To A Deserving Student

"She's strong-minded, opinionated, and gutsy."

We love tinsel and trappings as much as the next Elf on the Shelf devotees, but here at A Plus, we believe that true wintertime magic comes in the form of connection and human kindness. Over the next month, come back and join us in raising a glass to those who give — because what's December without a little holiday spirit?

Onscreen superhero Gal Gadot honored another "Wonder Woman" on Wednesday at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment breakfast. She was there to present the first-ever Wonder Woman scholarship from Warner Bros., which provides a four-year full ride to Loyola Marymount University.

"I've had the privilege of portraying a superhero onscreen, but the young women here today are the real superheroes," Gadot told the crowd. "They've overcome so many challenges in their lives, and they're driven to do more. They're the true leaders of tomorrow."

Gadot described the winner of the scholarship, a young woman named Carla Arellano who recently started at the university and aspires to be a screenwriter, as "strong-minded, opinionated, and gutsy," revealing that she needs the funding to continue her studies.

Arellano — who attended the breakfast with her mentor, Laurie Zaks of Mandeville Films — was surprised by the announcement, and approached the stage with tears in her eyes as the crowd gave her a standing ovation. She hugged Gadot and Justin Timberlake, who was also there to present scholarships.

"I knew something was up!" Arellano said when she reached the microphone. She went on to joke that all she can think about are her final papers for the semester, making the audience laugh. She finished with a quote from Frida Kahlo, which she first recited in Spanish: "Feet, what do I need you for, when I have wings to fly?"
