This Twitter User Asked People To Recast Movies With One Big Difference. Here's What They Came Up With.

How can we make this happen?

It's no mystery that Hollywood has a diversity problem. A study released last year revealed that only 31.4 percent of speaking roles in 2015 films went to women, while 73.7 percent of characters were White. LGBTQ characters, meanwhile, only made up 1 percent.

The issue has sparked a backlash among movie fans who want to see real life reflected on their screens. The recent Ghost in the Shell remake, which whitewashed its Asian lead by casting Scarlett Johansson, was a box-office dud. Moviegoers have frequently taken matters into their own hands by sharing their ideas for a more diverse film industry. The #StarringJohnCho hashtag, for example, placed the Asian-American actor into popular roles.

Over the weekend, another social media movement gave us even more ideas for diversifying Hollywood. Twitter user Brian J. White asked his followers to recast their favorite movies with only one rule in mind — no straight White male actors. He added that switching characters' genders was also encouraged.

The trend started when White shared his own casting for a new Batman movie starring Oscar Isaac in the lead role, with Lupita Nyong'o as Robin. How can we make this happen?

White's request quickly took off, as users recast movies in various genres and spanning several decades, all starring women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community.

It just goes to show how much demand there is for more diverse casting — people want to see these movies.
