"Saturday Night Live" announced three new cast members would join the show’s upcoming 43rd season.
The three newbies are Mikey Day, Alex Moffat, and Melissa Villaseñor. This is a big moment for all three newcomers, but is especially triumphant for Villaseñor, who will be the first Latina to join the show's cast.
Villaseñor addition continues SNL's ongoing effort to diversify its cast. In 2013, after calls from ColorOfChange.org for more Black women to join the show, we were introduced to Leslie Jones, who became a regular on the series.
In the past, Latino comedians Horatio Sanz, who is Chilean-American, and Fred Armisen, who has a Venezuelan, Japanese, and German ancestry, have been a part of the SNL cast, according to The Atlantic.
