Following Violence In Charlottesville, Zendaya’s Teen Choice Awards Speech Asks Young People To Make A Difference

"You are the future."

Sunday night's Teen Choice Awards were held in the wake of violence and tragedy at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend. While accepting the award for Choice Summer Movie Actress for her role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Zendaya took the opportunity to call on young people to stand up to hate.

"Spider-Man is about a young person, and so right now I want to talk to all of the young people in the audience," the 20-year-old began. "With all the injustice, and the hatred, and everything that is happening not only in the world but in our country, I need you guys to be educated. I need you to listen. I need you to pay attention."

Zendaya previously spoke out on social media about this weekend's violence, in which one person was killed and 19 others injured when a car plowed into a crowd of counterprotesters. "CALL IT WHAT IT IS," a viral tweet from the star read. "IT. IS. TERRORISM."

"I need you to go ahead and understand that you have a voice, and it is OK to use it when you see something bad happening," Zendaya continued in her speech. "So make sure that you stay educated, and you do not let people tell you what you think you should feel."

She went on to remind the young audience, "You're the future presidents, the future senators, and you guys are the ones who are gonna make this world better. So I'm just letting you know, right now, that you are the future."

The Hollywood Reporter points out that Zendaya wasn't the only Teen Choice winner to speak out about current events. While accepting an award with her fellow Fifth Harmony members, Lauren Jauregui shared, "In light of recent events, for all those young ones at home, no matter who you are or where you are from, you are beautiful and important. Keep spreading love and positivity."
