And all they needed were 140 characters.

While the signs of physical domestic abuse are sometimes noticeable, the signs of emotional and verbal abuse often go unseen. That is why activist and artist Zahira Kelly initiated a social media hashtag campaign called #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou.

"I hashtagged it to document it," Kelly told Bustle. "Before I knew it, it snowballed, and there were over 9,000 tweets from people sharing similar experiences."

Verbal abuse can start at a young age, with one in four teenage girls in relationships reporting it happening to them. And it could lead to something more.

"Emotional abuse almost always escalates to physical violence," Diane Lass, clinical psychologist at the Family Justice Center in San Diego, told Glamour in 2011.
