The Supreme Court is set to rule on same-sex marriage this month in a decision that could potentially have a historical impact on gay rights across the country. But one Internet star, famous for her lifestyle, beauty and fashion how-to videos, is making waves of her own. On Tuesday, YouTube sensation Ingrid Nilsen came out as gay to her fans and received an overwhelming outpouring of support in return.
The 26-year-old beauty guru posted an emotional video on YouTube announcing that she was gay and told viewers of the challenges of suppressing her natural attraction to other girls her entire life. Nilsen said that she had dated boys and had been in heterosexual relationships, explaining at length that she cared for them, but found it impossible to give herself fully to those relationships because "it's not in my nature."
I just kept telling myself: "This isn't bad. You can go through the motions of this. You can date guys, it's fine. It's not ideal, but it's not horrific or anything." And I was just living this quietly unhappy life where I just kept telling myself, essentially, that I wasn't worthy of happiness. That I wasn't worthy of true love coming from both sides. ...
This is me, sitting right here, right now. This is me. And the fact that I'm gay is a part of me.
Nilsen's video received an instant deluge of similarly emotional words of encouragement and kindness from her fans.
