Society is all the better for advances in gender and racial equality, but beneficiaries of the status quo (read: straight white men) aren't always down with the cause.
Take a recent men's rights conference in London, for example. Organized by the Justice for Men and Boys party (J4MB), among the event's speakers were men's rights bloggers who, according to The Guardian, have compared Malala Yousafzai to Osama bin Laden and railed against single mothers for being "bona fide idiots."
What lent the conference some semblance of validity, however, was Minister of Parliament Philip Davies, who delivered a 45-minute long speech to the crowd of discontented men about how the British justice system favored women and discriminated against men.
The British politician then said:
In this day and age, the feminist zealots really do want women to have their cake and eat it.
Naturally, social media had a field day with this quote. Disturbing as Davies' sentiment is, women on Twitter took the high, humorous road in their responses by posting photos of themselves literally eating cake (and various other delectable desserts) under the hashtags #FeministZealot and #LetThemEatCake.
