One Group Wants More Female Politicians — And Is Providing The Tool To Get Them Started

"This is a perfect time for women to run for office."

A new web series is about to make political waves by offering women a chance to learn more about running for public office.

VoteRunLead is an organization that focuses on empowering women to run for public office. Starting April 5, it's offering a free three-part web series that will teach women the fundamentals they need to run a successful bid for office as part of its own campaign, Run As You Are.

The organization has already had some success in training women to become a driving force in American politics. It had a hand in helping Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American legislator, win a spot as a state representative of Minnesota during the 2016 election.

With women being more motivated to run for political office these days, Erin Vilardi, VoteRunLead's founder and CEO, told Bustle that there's no reason that motivation shouldn't start now.

"This is a perfect time for women to run for office," she said. "They don't need years of political experience, they don't need to wait until their kids are grown or they've achieved that next career milestone, now is a great opportunity for women to throw their hat in the political arena and say 'I'm running today.' "

She also said that the longer women wait to get their names on the ballot, the more they'll continue to be underrepresented in politics.

"At the current rate, it will take at least 200 years to obtain gender parity in government since men make up 80 percent of the House and Senate, 80 percent of mayors, and 75 percent of state legislatures," she said.

The Run As You Are campaign is slowly gaining momentum on social media as women try to encourage other women to sign up for the free web series.
