Women Were Told They're 'Beautiful,' And Their Glowing Reactions Were Caught On Camera

"Life can be pretty trying sometimes, and it's awfully nice to get a compliment. It can just make your day."

In 2015, a high school student named Shea Glover made a video showing how her peers reacted when told they were beautiful. The video soon went viral, garnering over 16 million views to date.

"I conducted an independent project, which evidently turned into a social experiment halfway through," she captioned the video, because everyone's reactions were so incredibly different.

Now, in a video for Glamour magazine, Glover says her original project made her realize the true power of a compliment. So, years later, she's trying out the experiment again; this time, telling passersby they're taking a survey, then, surprising them with the question: "So what's it like being beautiful?"

According to a Glamour and L'Oreal Paris 2017 survey, only 31 percent of the women surveyed described themselves as beautiful, and one in five women say "I hate the way I look" when seeing  themselves in a mirror.

Women's general hesitancy to view themselves as beautiful is apparent in Glover's new video; nearly every time Glover poses her question, the women appear taken aback and even confused.

"Thank you, I appreciate it," one woman says, holding her hand over her heart.

"I don't really think of myself like that," another says.

Later, the women talk about how special it is to be complimented by a stranger. One participant says a stranger complimented her at the airport.

"She said I looked really beautiful, and my baby bump was so cute. So I don't know if it was more like a pregnancy compliment or ... " she says. "It made me feel awesome because I'm not feeling so beautiful lately."

"Life can be pretty trying sometimes, and it's awfully nice to get a compliment. It can just make your day," another adds.

At the end of the video, it's clear that as women, we need to remind ourselves — and others — just how beautiful we are.
