She May Be 77 Years Old, But By The Look Of Her Muscles, She's Definitely Not Slowing Down

Willie Murphy says people don't always believe their eyes when she takes the stage at power lifting competitions.

"The audience will say, oooh, that old lady is she lifting?" the 77-year-old grandmother and power lifter says in a USA Today video interview (below), imitating their tone of disbelief.

Yes, yes she is lifting. And it's pretty incredible.

Murphy told Rochester, New York newspaper Democrat and Chronicle that she began lifting in her seventies, a time when many people are slowing down. She started out with manageably small weights, but now she's able to deadlift 215 pounds, more than twice her body weight.

All that upper body strength must come in handy when she's lugging around the first place trophies she's won at competitions. She was also named the World Natural Powerlifting Federation 2014 Lifter Of The Year.

"I never use the word, 'I can't,'" she says of her success as she flexes her serious muscles at the camera. "I will just simply say, 'I will try.' That's the way I live my life, just trying to do my best every day."
