Your mother has been telling you not to crack your knuckles your whole life. But apparently, mama doesn't always know best.

As revealed in a recent Vox video, that "crack" you hear when you apply pressure to your knuckles is really just a release of gas that makes an audible popping sound. But what are its effects? 

Most scientific studies on the subject have revealed little or no correlation to arthritis, but one cited swelling that reduces function as a possible outcome.
