Emma Watson Reveals U.N. Told Her Not To Use 'Feminism' In Her Speech. Here's Why She Did Anyway.

It takes strength to make a change.

When Emma Watson gave her now famous "HeForShe" speech at the U.N., they advised her to do something she didn't quite agree with.

They advised her to not use the word "feminism."

As Watson explains in her cover story for Porter Magazine, the U.N. advised her not to use the term because "...people felt that it was alienating and separating and the whole idea of the speech was to include as many people as possible."

However, after some thinking, Watson decided that wasn't the right course of action.

She explains in the story: "I thought long and hard and ultimately felt that it was just the right thing to do. If women are terrified to use the word, how on earth are men supposed to start using it?"
