Since Tobey Maguire took on the role of the gentle Spider-Man, whose upside-down kiss surely spawned a whole set of real-life re-creations, it has curiously been a persistent presence in the periphery of our pop culture consciousness. There was a reboot with Andrew Garfield and a doomed Broadway musical, both of which made little to no waves compared to Maguire's Spidey success. But there will be yet another new Spider-Man, this time portrayed by Tom Holland, a fresh-faced 19-year-old British teen still relatively new to the big screen.
Tom who, you ask? Can our new Peter Parker handle the great power that comes with this role — and more importantly, the great responsibility? Judging by his rising star, he just might be able to. Holland's last big film, The Impossible, where he starred alongside Naomi Watts, saw him become a serious Oscar contender in 2012, though he ultimately was not nominated.
The London-born Holland is an alumnus of the elite BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, which vocal powerhouses Adele and Amy Winehouse also attended. As a wee lad, Holland nabbed the lead role in Billy Elliott the Musical, which he starred in for years on London's West End.
Of course, not everyone can play Peter Parker well, no matter their acting chops, but perhaps this clip of his acrobatic skills — that will surely come in handy in Spider-Man — might convince the non-believers.
