Once A Year, This Crystal Clear River Turns Into A Liquid Rainbow

One of nature's miracles.

Caño Cristales in Meta, Colombia is called "The River That Ran Away From Paradise" and "The Most Beautiful River In The World." Others call it "The River Of Five Colors" because of the incredible, jewel-like hues that explode throughout the river after the rainy season ends in July.

The waters are incredibly clear — there is little in the way of fine-grained sand in the fast-moving waters of Caño Cristales — but as September approaches, a rare, bright-red species of plant called Macarenia clavigera blooms in the low-water levels, and makes the body of water look absolutely beautiful.
