This 13-Year-Old Teen Just Raised $10,000 For Other Girls To See 'Hidden Figures' In Theaters

#STEMforALL should be 2017's slogan.

A visit to the White House to watch the film Hidden Figures is all it took to inspire 13-year-old Taylor Richardson to start a GoFundMe page to raise money for other girls to see it, too.

Taylor — who is an aspiring astronaut from Duval County, Fla. — created the campaign on New Year's Eve, seeking to raise $2,600 for 100 girls to go see the film in theaters on January 21. The costs are supposed to cover snacks, drinks, and the accompanying book, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. But since then, the campaign has raised more than $10,000 from donors around the world.

And according to Taylor's Twitter, more tickets will be purchased at the AMC Regency theater in Jacksonville, Fla., for the screening.

The box office hit is based on a true story about Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson — three Black women whose major contribution to the NASA world was helping to launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit in 1962.

Taylor also happens to be a major advocate for breaking the stigma that STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math — isn't suitable for girls, especially for girls of color.

"As a girl of color, it's important that girls not only look at the stars but take the steps to reach for them; because many years ago a group of black women marched into a room as programmers and changed the game not only of space exploration but broke gender barriers as well," she said on her GoFundMe page.

Luckily for Taylor, there are more campaigns raising money to send girls to see the movie across the country. Even Octavia Spencer, who plays Vaughan in Hidden Figures, bought out a movie theater in Baldwin Hills, Calif., on Friday for families to go see it.
