Taylor Swift Returned To Her Roots For A Surprise Performance In Nashville

The Bluebird Cafe holds special meaning for Swift.

Taylor Swift returned to where it all began on Saturday. The 28-year-old singer showed up for a surprise performance at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee, where she first performed as a teenager after convincing her family to move to the city. It was in the same cafe that Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Label Group offered Swift a record deal.

According to The Tennessean, Swift joined scheduled performer Craig Wiseman (who's written songs for Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney) to perform for about 40 country music fans, who gave her a standing ovation. The set was filmed for a documentary marking the Bluebird Cafe's 35th anniversary. A split image posted on Twitter showed just how far Swift has come, comparing 2004 to 2018.

"I wanted to say a big thank you to the Bluebird Cafe," Swift said during her appearance. "I think any songwriter in town would echo my sentiments and say that this is kind of the only place where this exists -- this particular place where you get to come and hear the writer's take on the songs they've put out into the world."

Swift performed her hit "Shake It Off" for the crowd, calling it an example of one of the biggest lessons she learned about songwriting in Nashville: "If there's truth in it, don't over think it. It can be the same three chords over and over again."

She also performed the song "Better Man," which she wrote for the band Little Big Town, as well as "Love Story," which she almost wrote with Wiseman.

Swift and Wiseman also reminisced about the time, at a CMT after-party, when Swift and her friend Ed Sheeran stole Wiseman's large, inflatable bottle of Fireball. As a joke, Wiseman pulled out small bottles of the whisky, which he and Swift then drank.

Swift may be a little more pop than country these days, but we're happy to see she hasn't forgotten where it all started.
