NASCAR and MLB Get the High Tech Treatment

Whether giving fans at home higher quality video accompanied by in-depth statistics, or using iBeacons to better facilitate parking at stadiums, media and technology are essential to effective engagement between  athletes, teams and fans.

This was the subject of the SXSW Panel MLBAM and NASCAR: Sports and Technology Converge, featuring Brent Dewar, Chief Operating Officer of NASCAR and Bob Bowman, President and CEO MLBAM.

As the two sports executives explained, for fans today more equals better; everyone wants instantaneous information.

"Innovation happens when there's tension in the system and a need to solve that problem," said Dewar. Two years ago, the focus was on pushing out content to fans, but now the fans push out content themselves.

Understanding that "my time is primetime", the leagues now must follow fans. "Smartphones are now the first screen. Reality is the second. Bowman acknowledged.
