A couple months back we featured an open letter from an HIV positive 22-year-old French woman, with which she aimed to break the stigma surrounding the virus.
Now, a Finish man named Janne, who is also HIV positive, has taken another step towards raising awareness of what it feels like to live with HIV. And what a powerful statement it is.
Janne stood with his eyes closed in the city center of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. He had two signs on both sides — one in Finish and one in English — that read "I am HIV-positive. Touch me." There were a lot of people that simply walked away after reading the sign. Others would approach hesitantly and shake Janne's hand.
But then came all the hugs. From kids, mothers, young men. Judging by Janne's reaction, this was overwhelming.
Someone pass us a tissue. The power of a human touch is truly beautiful.
