This 10-Year-Old Wowed The 'So You Think You Can Dance' Judges With His Robot Moves

This season, it's all about the kids.

Last night, So You Think You Can Dance premiered "The Next Generation," a new season that's all about showcasing talented dancers between the ages of 8 and 13. One of the highlights of the Los Angeles auditions was Merrick, a 10-year-old boy with some amazing robot moves.

It's appropriate that Merrick is so good at dancing like a robot, considering he dreams of one day becoming a robotic engineer.

Merrick starts his hip-hop freestyle audition with a bit of a fake-out, showing off some cute but ultimately mediocre moves. You can practically see the judges mentally formulating their gentle rejections. It doesn't take long for them to change their minds as Merrick transitions into his true routine.

Judge Nigel Lythgoe admits he was fooled by Merrick's less-than-impressive start, but he ultimately calls the dance "ridiculous" — in a good way. Meanwhile, Paula Abdul praises the "fluidity" of Merrick's movements, and Jason Derulo is all-around amused by his technique.

Merrick received a yes from all three judges, which means he'll move on to the next round: a "Dance Academy" where former So You Think You Can Dance stars will decide which young hopefuls will continue to work with them this season.
