Last year, gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman took home the gold for Team USA at the Rio Olympics, and stole our hearts in the process. This year, we're absolutely flipping over their new photos in the 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
According to the magazine's official announcement, the women were photographed by James Macari at the North Houston Skate Park and the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden. Sneak peek photos from the shoot were shared on Instagram, and they're just as badass as you would expect from two members of the Final Five.
Biles and Raisman's photos convey an empowering message that bodies can be both strong and beautiful. In a statement, Sports Illustrated swimsuit editor MJ Day shared why the magazine is proud to feature them:
"Aly and Simone represent all that is beautiful and strong and inspiring in women today. Women that are not only elite athletes, that are captivating and impressive in their own professional accomplishments (lots and lots of Olympic gold medals between them), but strikingly sexy and beautiful in front of photographer James Macari's lens. I love seeing them shine in an entirely different way in the Swimsuit issue and being able to share these gorgeous and powerful images with the world. These women, their beauty, and what they can achieve know no limits."
The gymnasts' photos also make a powerful statement, considering the team has faced cruel online comments in the past over the way their athletic figures look in swimsuits. In December, Biles responded to body shaming over one of her Instagram photos by simply tweeting, "You all can judge my body all you want, but at the end of the day it's MY body. I love it & I'm comfortable in my skin."
