According to She THINX, an innovative brand specializing in women's underwear, over 100 million girls in the developing world miss school monthly, just because they don't have access to feminine hygiene products.
But She THINX is working to change that.
One of the three THINX co-founders, Miki Agrawal, tells The Huffington Post that in some places, women have to use sticks and leaves to keep themselves clean during their menstruation cycle. Additionally, when girls aren't in school and don't have access to the benefits of an education, they are statistically more likely to contract disease, get pregnant early or have lower incomes.
"But when girls have simple pads, two important things happen,"Agrawal tells HuffPost. "The first is graduation rates increase, and of course this means they have a better chance at having better income potential. The second positive outcome is early pregnancy rates decrease significantly."
First, She THINX created a new pair of (might we add) genius underwear that eliminates the need for extra pads during a women's cycle.
As described in a video for the brand, each pair of underwear is equally "protective, comfortable, and cute."
Moreover, the underwear can be worn any time of the month (including during a woman's period), seeing as they're made with unique, layered materials that are absorbent and leak-proof. Genius, right? Good thing THINX QuadTECH's technology is patented.
And this all comes at a much-needed time. Agrawal tells Forbes that since the tampon hit the scene in 1931, there have been hardly any major innovations, making it time to "change the taboo."
Going beyond the surface: Each pack of underwear a consumer purchases funds a pack of reusable pads for girls who don't otherwise have access to them.
