Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty revealed a raw, vulnerable, and exceptionally courageous side to her private life yesterday in an act that is sure to inspire others to stay hopeful and strong.
Doherty announced her diagnosis on The Dr. Oz Show earlier this year, revealing that the tumor was discovered last March and that she was in the process of making a decision between the surgery options of either a mastectomy or a lumpectomy.
During the interview with Dr. Oz, which was later posted online by Entertainment Tonight, she spoke candidly about what was to come next: "Ultimately, they're just breasts, right? I mean, I love them, they're mine, they're beautiful, but in the grand scheme of things, I would rather be alive, and I would rather grow old with my husband," she said.
In the same interview, Doherty revealed the additional pressures faced by women in Hollywood to adhere to a certain standard of beauty. "I think that people think that I'm 'sick,' and therefore I'm unable to perform," the actress said.c"There will be that recovery time and that I just have to take for myself. But it's also because you do change a little bit while you're on the medicine. You gain weight, and there is nothing that you can do about it … I think that all affects a career like mine that's not only based on talent, but it's so much based on sort of the superficial shell that is right here."
We salute Shannen Doherty's courage, and will keep her and her family in our hearts and thoughts as she begins her fight against breast cancer.
