Although the crying Michael Jordan meme reigns supreme on the internet these days, the brilliance of sad Ben Affleck is a close second. While on an exhaustive media tour promoting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Affleck and co-star Henry Cavill were asked by Yahoo Movies what their reaction was to the flood of negative reviews coming in right at release. While Cavill explained that the fan reaction is more important than the critical response, Affleck looked, well, exceedingly sad.
And lo, a meme was born, the best of which was a zoom on the actor's face to the tune of Simon & Garfunkel's 1964 hit "The Sound of Silence." Check it out:
Now it seems as though the crazy popularity of the video (it has roughly 22 million views as this article is being written) has actually resulted in a massive boost for the classic song. According to Billboard, "The Sound of Silence" has hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, 50 years after it first topped the chart. Nielsen Music also has the song on the Rock Streaming Songs chart at No. 2 with 5.6 million U.S. streams (5.1 million from YouTube), an increase of 582 percent.
So even if the film didn't live up to its massive hype, at least Batman is doing a little good in this word elsewhere.
