Rose McGowan Delivers An Empowering Message At The Women's Convention In Detroit

"We are pure, we are strong, we are brave and we will fight."

On October 27, actress Rose McGowan delivered an impassioned and thought-provoking speech to kick off the Women's Convention in Detroit. The speaking engagement marked the first time McGowan publicly addressed the rape allegations she made against producer Harvey Weinstein earlier this month, and while the disgraced Hollywood mogul was alluded to in her talk, his name was never uttered.

Instead, the 44-year-old took the opportunity to send a universal and empowering message to women all over the world, and called for them to take a stand against abuse, harassment, and marginalization. After being introduced by activist and founder of the #MeToo movement, Tarana Burke, McGowan started off by showing her appreciation for other women. "Thank you to all of you fabulous, strong, powerful #MeToos," she declared. "Because we are all #MeToos."

"I have been silenced for 20 years," she continued, speaking of her own personal experience. "I have been slut-shamed. I have been harassed. I have been maligned, and you know what? I'm just like you because what happened to me behind the scenes happens to all of us in this society. And that cannot stand, and it will not stand."

McGowan, who stopped for uproarious applause several times throughout her speech, then shifted the focus to all women. "We are free. We are strong. We are one massive collective voice," she declared. "No more will we be shunted to the side. No more will we be hurt. It's time to be whole. It's time to rise. It's time to be brave."

McGowan encouraged women and their allies from all walks of life to come together and be heard, be it in relation to sexual assault, sexual harassment, or the environment. "My sisters, our allies, our brothers — we are no nation. We are no country. We belong to no flag. We are a planet of women, and you will hear us roar," she said. "I came to be a voice for all of us who've been told we were nothing, for all of us who've been looked down on, for all of us who've been grabbed by the motherf—ing pussy. No more. Name it. Shame it. Call it out. Join me, join all of us as we amplify each other's voices and we do what is right for us and for our sisters and for this planet, mother Earth."

McGowan was quick to point out that the problem is not unique to Hollywood. "It's the same situation, and that situation must end because it is not our shame. The scarlet letter is theirs. It is not ours," she concluded. "We are pure, we are strong, we are brave and we will fight. Pussies grab back. Women grab back. We speak, we yell, we march, we are here, we will not go away."

No surprisingly, McGowan's powerful speech is already garnering praise from many online. Several people thanked her for her bravery and candor, while others were just in awe of her words. Take a look at some of the moving reactions below:
