Reddit users have come together to raise thousands of dollars for the victim of a horrific beating that was aired on Facebook Live.
On Tuesday, a group of teenagers broadcasted themselves torturing a young man who was apparently their classmate. After the footage went viral, users on the subreddit Uplifting News came together to start a GoFundMe for the victim.
It was a moving moment of love and support in response to a frightening video. During the video, four young African Americans are seen kicking and beating a white 18-year-old male, who The New York Times described as having mental disabilities. They scream profanities about Donald Trump and "white people" throughout the video, which left much of the conversation about the video devolving into whether it was a hate crime or not.
But instead of joining the chorus discussing who was to blame, Reddit users decided to come together, support the victim and spread the love. As of this writing, they've raised $39,147 of their $10,000 goal, exceeding their original goal of $5,000.
In the comment section of the Reddit thread, people sent love and respect towards the victim and his family.
"Out of respect for the victim, I won't be watching the video," one user wrote. "If it had happened to me, I wouldn't want anyone to see it."
