The Purple One has never been a fan of doing things the conventional way. Prince released his new single, "HARDROCKLOVER," on SoundCloud on July 1 with zero promotion, in an epic power move that proves he's still a force to be reckoned with in music. The single, about his seduction of a woman who loves rock music, hits hard and fast. Full of screaming guitars and silky smooth vocals, "HARDROCKLOVER" is classic Prince, but it still sounds like the perfect song to kick off summer 2015.
Over the past month, Prince has released one other new song on SoundCloud: "Baltimore," about the racial tensions in that city after the deaths of Michael Brown and Freddie Gray. "HARDROCKLOVER" is less politically motivated, but equally passionate. The singer namechecks a variety of musicians, including REM, Sade, and Babyface — but he indicates in his lyrics that he's more comfortable in the rock star role than as a rapper or R&B artist.
Known for his incredible work ethic, Prince just put out two albums last September, Art Official Age and Plectrumelectrum. It's only been nine months, and already he's released these new songs (plus an addition single, "Hit and Run," which came out in March). We're definitely not complaining.
